How to store chocolate covered rice krispie treats as make-ahead party treats

What's not to love about taking a basic rice krispie treat recipe and making it extra special by covering it in chocolate? Whether it's for bake sales, birthday parties, or just because you want a sweet treat, chocolate-dipped rice krispie treats are always a hit.

Learn the tricks of the trade for crafting customized, mouthwatering chocolate dipped rice krispie treats while making sure they stay fresh and delicious every step of the way.

Since they can go stale relatively quickly, it’s good to know how to preserve the freshness and texture of cereal treats, Here's how to do it:

Room Temperature: Store the treats in an airtight container at room temperature. This helps maintain their flavor and prevents them from drying out.

Avoid Refrigeration: Avoid storing chocolate-covered treats in the refrigerator, as the moisture can cause them to become stale and lose their crispiness.

Freezing Option: If you need to store them for a longer period, you can freeze chocolate-covered rice crispy treats.

Bag each treat individually in cellophane and heat seal it to maintain freshness. Then, place them in a single layer in an airtight container or freezer bag. Ensure they are tightly sealed to prevent freezer burn.

Thawing: When ready to enjoy, thaw the treats at room temperature. In general, it's best to allow the treats to thaw for approximately 1 to 2 hours before serving or selling them.

By following these storage tips, you can keep your chocolate-covered rice crispy treats fresh and delicious for an extended period, allowing you to enjoy them whenever you want.

How to get started making chocolate-dipped rice krispies treats

What ingredients do I need?

For the rice krispie treats, you'll need butter, marshmallows, and rice krispie cereal. For dipping, white candy melts (Merckens are my favorite) and oil-based food colors are recommended.

The full recipe can be found on the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

Where can I find the ingredients?

You can find the ingredients at your local grocery store or online. Specific brands like MERKENS for candy melts can be found in baking or confectionery stores.

What's the best way to dip in chocolate?

Melt white candy melts in the microwave or double boiler, then dip cooled treats into the melted chocolate, ensuring even coverage.

When dipping rice crispy treats into melted chocolate, the choice of tool depends on whether you want the treat entirely dipped in chocolate or partially dipped. Here's how to decide:

  1. Partial Dip (using a Cake Pop Stick or Popsicle Stick): If you prefer to partially dip the treat in chocolate, making it easier to handle or adding decorative touches, a cake pop stick or popsicle stick works well. Simply insert the stick into the bottom of the treat before dipping. This method offers control and versatility for creating various dipping designs.
  1. Full Dip (using a Candy Fork): For a complete coating of chocolate around the entire treat, a candy fork is the best option. Designed specifically for dipping treats into melted chocolate, the candy fork provides precise control and ensures even coverage. It's ideal for smaller treats or when you want a uniform chocolate coating.

How should I store the treats?

Store chocolate-covered treats in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3-5 days to maintain freshness. Avoid storing them in the refrigerator, as it can make them taste stale. However, you can freeze them if they are heat-sealed in a freezer bag.

How to make shaped Rice Krispy treats

Here's how you can use cookie cutters to shape rice crispy treats:

Using cookie cutters is a convenient and easy way to create fun and customizable shapes without the need for molds.

  1. Prepare your rice crispy treats according to your recipe.
  2. Once the mixture is pressed into the pan and set, use cookie cutters to cut out shapes.
  3. Press the cookie cutter firmly into the rice crispy treat mixture and then carefully lift the cutter to remove the shape.

Using cookie cutters allows you to create a variety of shapes, plus, you can easily switch between different cookie cutter shapes to cater to different occasions or preferences.
