I first discovered these cookie mix jars when I was looking for items with a long shelf life to offer in my baking business. I wanted a way to offset the amount of daily baking I had to do, and cookie mix jars became a perfect solution. They’re simple to prepare, beautifully layered, and have the added bonus of being homemade gifts that everyone loves to receive.

What You’ll Need to Make Cookie Mix in a Jar

This cookie mix recipe is designed for a quart-size mason jar (a wide-mouth jar works best for easy layering). Here’s everything you need to create this gift:

Dry Ingredients:

  • 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour (use GF flour for a gluten-free option)
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup white sugar
  • ¾ cup packed dark brown sugar (or light brown sugar)
  • 1 ½ cups semi-sweet chocolate chips (mini chips work well for smaller bites)

Optional Add-ins:
For variety, add ½ cup oats to make it an oatmeal chocolate chip cookie mix or swap chocolate chips with white chocolate chips for a fun twist!

Additional Supplies:

  • Quart-size wide-mouth mason jar
  • Canning funnel for easy layering
  • Card stock for free printable tag or recipe card
  • Ribbon or twine for a finishing touch

Layering Instructions

To create beautiful and tidy layers, start with the dry ingredients listed below. Use a canning funnel for best results:

  1. Bottom of the jar: Add flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. These create a sturdy base.
  2. Layer the dark brown sugar, pressing it down lightly with a spoon for an even, compact layer.
  3. Add the white sugar layer next, pressing down gently.
  4. Top of the jar: Finally, add chocolate chips for a festive finish.

Seal the jar tightly, and keep it in a cool, dark place until ready to gift.

Wet Ingredients & Baking Instructions (For the Gift Recipient)

On the free printable tag, include these instructions so the recipient can bake the cookies fresh!

Wet Ingredients Needed:

  • ¾ cup melted butter
  • 1 large egg, at room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Baking Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine the jar contents with the wet ingredients.
  3. Mix until a soft dough forms.
  4. Drop rounded spoonfuls of dough onto an ungreased cookie sheet.
  5. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.
  6. Let cookies cool on a wire rack before serving.

This recipe makes about 24-36 cookies, depending on cookie size. Perfect for sharing!

When to Gift a Cookie Mix in a Jar

A cookie mix in a jar makes an amazing gift for so many occasions! It’s thoughtful, homemade, and super easy to pull together. Here are some fun times to gift one of these, along with a few ideas to add a personal touch:

1. For the Holidays

The holiday season is perfect for gifting these little jars of joy.

Add some holiday vibes by tying on a festive ribbon, like red or green, and maybe throw in a mini ornament or candy cane. Swap in holiday-colored M&Ms for some of the chocolate chips if you want to make it extra Christmassy!

2. As a Hostess Gift

Bring one as a thank-you gift when you’re heading to a dinner party or holiday get-together.

Go for a more sophisticated look with a simple ribbon and a nice handwritten tag. If you’re feeling fancy, add a card with a hot cocoa recipe to pair with the cookies.

3. For Baby Showers or Bridal Showers

These are perfect as party favors or sweet keepsakes for guests.

Use pink, blue, or pastel-colored ribbon for a baby shower vibe. For a bridal shower, a little note saying "Sweet Beginnings" adds a lovely touch.

4. For Teacher Appreciation

These make a great thank-you for Teacher Appreciation Week, the holidays, or the end of the school year.

Go with fun twine and a chalkboard-style label to give it a classroom feel. You can even attach a cute mini wooden spoon!

5. For Birthdays

Perfect for friends, neighbors, or anyone who loves a homemade treat.

Customize with their favorite mix-ins, like toffee bits or white chocolate chips. Add a tag that says, “Happy Birthday! Enjoy some sweet treats!”

6. As a Get-Well or Sympathy Gift

It’s a thoughtful gesture when someone needs a little comfort.

Keep it simple with a tag that says, “Wishing you a little sweetness” and make sure it’s easy for them to bake whenever they need it.

Pro Tips for Presentation:

  • Neat Layers Are Key: Make those layers look pretty by pressing each one down a bit. It’ll keep things clean and visually appealing!
  • Use a Wide-Mouth Jar: Makes life easier for layering and looks nice, too.
  • Add Instructions: Don’t forget to tie on a tag with the baking steps. You can use our free printable to make it a breeze!

So there you go! Tons of ways to make these cookie jars feel unique and special for just about any occasion.

I can't wait to try this recipe. Can you confirm the measurement for the flour? One says 2 1/4 cups and the other has 1 3/4 cups. Thank You!

Just made this with my daughter and wondered why it didn’t fit! Your blog post says 2 1/4th flour and the recipe says 1 3/4 cup. Not a big deal I just went on your blog trying to follow layering instructions. Just wanted to mention in case anyone else did it that way. I’m sure they will still taste good!

1 3/4 cup is the correct amount. It's been corrected in the blog post. Happy baking!
